carriage house lighting solution?

I’ve been trying to decide on light fixtures for our carriage house for a while now and I think I’ve found my favorite option so far. Of course, it is far more involved than simply buying new pendants or a chandelier. I’d like to try and make pretty pendants out of old insulators. Like this:

I found a tutorial on Girl in Air, so I’m hoping we can find some pretty insulators that Sal’s cool with drilling (some are valuable and drilling would be out of the question).

I’d like to hang them as a group in the main room but haven’t come up with the exact design. Any ideas? Remember, they’ll be hanging from the exposed wood ceiling and competing with rafters.

Of course the old screen is gone now and everything is painted white, but you get the idea.
